“It has become quite the thing among florists …”

Franz Skarbina 1849-1910

December 22, 1888
New York Times

It has become quite the thing among florists
to provide their customers at this season with tiny
Christmas trees not more than a foot in height.
They charge fabulous prices for the little shrubs,
for it will be fashionable this year for persons who
have a passion to attend to all the regulations of
Vanity Fair to tie their Christmas presents to
one of the branches of the little trees and boxing them up
in pretty silk or satin cases express them to the
proposed recipient of the gift. The florists say they
can scarcely obtain sufficient trees to go around, so
great is the demand for them.
